Laws of Non-Contradiction, Laws of the Excluded Middle and Logics

چکیده
There is widespread acknowledgement that the law of non-contradiction is an important logical principle. However, there is less-than-universal agreement on exactly what the law amounts to. This unclarity is brought to light by the emergence of paraconsistent logics in which contradictions are tolerated: From the point of view of proofs, not everything need follow from a contradiction — from the point of view of models, there are “worlds” in which contradictions are true. In this sense, the law of non-contradiction is violated in these logics. However, in many paraconsistent logics, statement (it is not the case that and not) is still provable. In this sense, the law of non-contradiction is upheld. This paper attempts to clarify the different readings of the law of non-contradiction, in particular taking cues from the tradition of relevant logics. A further guiding principle will be the natural duality between the law of non-contradiction and rejection on the one hand and the law of the excluded middle and acceptance on the

Aggregation, Non-Contradiction and Excluded-Middle
This paper investigates the satisfaction of the Non-Contradiction (NC) and Excluded-Middle (EM) laws within the domain of aggregation operators. It provides characterizations both for those aggregation operators that satisfy NC/EM with respect to (w.r.t.) some given strong negation, as well as for those satisfying them w.r.t. any strong negation. The results obtained are applied to some of the ...
متن کاملConcerning the Laws of Contradiction and Excluded Middle
I Tradition usually assigns greater importance to the so-called laws of thought than to other logical principles. Since these laws could apparently not be deduced from the other principles without circularity and all deductions appeared to make use of them, their priority was considered well established. Generally, it was held that the laws of thought have no proof and need none, that as univer...
متن کاملOn Aristotle's NC and EM Principles in Three-valued Logics
By interpreting ‘p is impossible’ by ‘p is selfcontradictory’, and ‘p is always’ by ‘not p is self-contradictory’, this paper studies which of the three-valued systems of Łucasiewicz, Gödel, Kleene, Bochvar, and Post, do verify the Aristotle’s principles of Non-Contradiction (NC), and Excluded-Middle (EM). Keywords— Systems of three-valued logic, Non-Contradiction, Excluded-Middle.
متن کاملThe Three Laws of Thought, Plus One: The Law of Comparisons
The rules of logic are nearly 2500 years old and date back to Plato and Aristotle who set down the three laws of thought: identity, non-contradiction, and excluded middle. The use of language and logic has been adequate for us to develop mathematics, prove theorems, and create scientific knowledge. However, the laws of thought are incomplete. We need to extend our logical system by adding to th...
متن کاملThe effect of new road traffic laws on fatal and non-fatal injury rates in Iran
Background and aims: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of enforcement of new traffic laws on the fatal and non- fatal injury rates in Iran. Methods: In a longitudinal, interventional controlled trial study, all subjects with history of fatal and non-fatal injuries were studied. Their injuries were caused by six risky violations (unauthorized speed, illegal overtaking, red traffic light c...
